Dry Needling

Both of our Physiotherapists, Ian and James, are qualified in dry needling… But what is it?

What is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling is a treatment technique whereby a sterile, single-use, fine acupuncture needle is inserted into the muscle to assist with decreasing pain and improving function through the release of myofascial trigger points (knots in the muscle).

Dry needling is different to acupuncture as it focuses on releasing the muscle, whereas traditional acupuncture focuses on restoring the bodies energy flow through key points called meridians to restore balance.

A muscle knot (trigger point) forms when a group of muscle fibres have not be able to return to their normal relaxed position after being worked or contracted.

They can develop for varies reasons including post injury, a change in regular activity, sustained or poor posture, stress or anxiety, illness, nerve irritation, sudden unexpected or quick movements.

How does Dry Needling work?

When the needle is inserted into the knot or trigger point it stimulates the muscle to relax by increasing blood flow which brings oxygen and nutrients to the area.

You may experience a twitch of the muscle and a sting as the needle is inserted into the muscle. This discomfort only lasts for a second before settling but you may feel tender after the treatment session and it is advised that you do not do strenuous exercise that day.

Our Physiotherapists often use Dry Needling alongside other Physiotherapy treatments during your session to aid your rehab.
